Electronic gadgets can cause speech delay - Sky Speech and Hearing Care

Delay the use of touch screen electronics for your baby or risk speech delay

A new study has found a link between the use of handheld devices by babies and speech delay. The study was presented at the 2017 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting. The research studied the correlation between speech delay and time spent by children between ages six months and two years with handheld electronics (smartphones, tablets and electronic games). Of the study group of 1,070 kids, about 70% of the children had no handheld screen time and 20% spent an average of 28 minutes per day using handheld, touch screen electronic devices. The researchers identified a significant association between handheld screen time and expressive speech disorder. They also found that for every 30 minutes of screen use above the average the risk increased 49%. Analyzed by speech therapy centres in Coimbatore.

More research is needed

This was initial research and the only concrete finding was the need for more research. Regardless, we speech therapy for children are not surprised by the speech delay results. Many of the children are obsessed with the smartphones and iPads and if they are in sight it is very difficult to keep them motivated to do any other activity. Smartphone use definitely  seems to work against improving or promoting social language skills.

Note, this study looked at very young children.

Technology is great to motivate pre-schoolers and grade school children to learn (ex. preschoolers learning letters or grade school kids practicing math facts). In developing infants it sure seems to cause some trouble.

Hence it is important to take sensible decisions as parents to help your child progress.

Toddler-aged children from 2 to 3 years old can display symptoms of ADHD.

The three main signs of the condition in kids over age 3 :

  • Inattention
  • Hyperactivity
  • Impulsivity

These behaviors also occur in children without ADHD. Your child won’t be diagnosed with the condition unless symptoms continue for more than six months and affect their ability to participate in age-appropriate activities. Great care needs to be taken in diagnosing a child under 5 with ADHD, particularly if medication is being considered with Sky speech and hearing care centre.

Activities that indicate ADHD

- Inability to focus on one activity
- Difficulty listening as a result of distraction
- Being overly fidgety and squirmy
- Having an inability to sit still for calm activities like eating and having books read to them
-  Running from toy to toy, or constantly being in motion
- Having difficulty controlling their emotions
- Aggressive behavior when playing
- Overly bold behavior
- Inability to hop on one foot by age 4

If you are feeling dubious about your child’s behavior, don’t guess — consult a  specialist

Tips to improve listening skills in toddlers

Making your toddler listen to you can be a huge task. Each child is different and their temperaments differ. You can experiment and test various methods to understand your child better and improve their listening skills. Below are some tried and tested methods to improve listening skill of toddlers.
#1 Call using their names
Constantly calling by their names makes it clear for them they need to be alert and listen to what is said next. Calling their name will be their cue to be attentive and thereby improving their listening skills.
#2 Kneel and get their eye-level
Squat or kneel to come in direct eye-contact with your toddler. This helps make a better connection between you and child. The child grasps what is said more quicker than when said in a normal posture. Squatting down to their level and communicating positively affects their listening skills.

#3 Make eye contact
Even in the case for the elders, making an eye-contact means there is better level of conversation between people. Same applies to children. Make direct eye contact before you talk or give instructions. You can see that there is much more improved listening skills in your child.
#4 Use gestures and expressions
Though your child can reasonably understand your language, using gestures and expression makes it much clearer and thereby increases the listening skills of the child. For example you can furrow your eyebrow or shake your head to make your child understand better.
#5 Try singing
Music can be powerful when your toddler does not listen to you. If you try singing what you want to say, there are chances for your toddler to pay more attention and listen to what you are saying. This will gradually increase their listening skills.
